Gay-rights activist dies after battle with cancer
This article appeared in the 3/18/06 issue of the Statesman Journal Newspaper:
The Salem gay community lost an advocate, a cornerstone and a mother this week.
Patricia Read Jackson, 74, a co-founder of the LifeLine AIDS project and a community activist for many years, died Wednesday after a 10-year battle with cancer.
Her list of personal accomplishments reads like those of an extensive community group, although she was just one person.
Through her life and work, Jackson proved that one person with enough charisma, compassion and motivation can make a difference.

Patricia Jackson Passes Away
Patricia Jackson passed away Wednesday, March 15th, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was at home in the care of family and friends. Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to her longtime life partner Mary, daughters Brenda and Deborah, son Richard, and her extended family.
Patricia worked tirelessly for the HIV/AIDS community in Salem and the mid-Willamette valley for close to 20 years. She was instrumental in the forming of the first HIV/AIDS organization in Salem, Mid-Oregon AIDS Support Services (MASS). As a volunteer, Patricia went to the Marion County Jail and Oregon Department of Corrections facilities to provide HIV/AIDS support and education. For the last ten years, Patricia was Executive Director of LifeLine AIDS Project, providing much needed assistance to those affected by HIV/AIDS. The love and support she had for so many people will continue to be an inspiration for those of us firmly committed to continuing her work.
A Celebration of Life for Patricia will be on Tuesday, March 21, 2006, 3:00pm, at City View Funeral Home, located at 390 Hoyt Street South, in Salem. Phone 503-363-8652.
A potluck reception will follow, and all are welcome to share their stories and love of Patricia.
